Navigating the FTP & How it Works

An FTP is a file transfer protocol. It allows transferring computer files between a
client and server on a computer network. This means we can upload computer files to a website and download files from a website to our computer.

At Silvertoad, we use FileZilla. Open up FileZilla.

TO ACCESS AN EXISTING SITE THAT’S ALREADY ON THE FTP:
Click the top right icon or drop down arrow for site manager.

This will open up a list of the sites already connected to the FTP.  Select the one you wish to access. If a website is not published, it will be in Dev.

On the unknown certificate pop up, click OK.

If you are in dev, click into public_html, then click on the site you wish to access.

You’ll then see all the files for your site in this window.

To upload a file, go into the appropriate folder. This will likely be in wp-content. To upload file, just drag and drop. This will likely be in plugins, or document/image uploads which will go in uploads.

TO ADD A SITE TO THE FTP

This is not necessary with Dev sites.

The quickest way to do this is by using the Quickconnect tool.

View the Connect to FTP SOM for more details on this.
