Most of our SSLs come combined as part of our hosting package and can be assigned for free via cPanel.
If this option is not viable, follow the below instructions.
Either way, ensure the SSL is logged on the SSL spreadsheet.
SSL For Free
- Go to https://www.sslforfree.com
- Login using tech@silvertoad.co.uk
- Enter the web address for the site you want to secure
- Click Create Free SSL Certificate
- Click Manual Verification
- Click Manually Verify Domain
- Wait for the page to load – this may take a while
- In Upload Verification Files, download the files given by links. This may be one or two.
- Go to the server that the site is hosted on and log in
- Go to Account information, list accounts, search for the site you are updating.
- Click the orange CP
- Open file manager
- Go to public.html
- Open .well-known (or create a folder if need be)
- Open acme-challenge (create if you need to)
- Click upload
- Upload the files you just downloaded.
- Go back to the tab where you clicked File Manager (after orange CP), find SSL/TLS
- Click SSL/TLS
- Click Install and Manage SSL for your site (HTTPS) > Manage SSL sites.
- Go back to SSLforFree.com
- Click Download SSL Certificates
- Wait for it to load – this may take a while
- Once it opens, copy the contents of the Certificate box into the certificate box on the server
- Do this with the private key and CA bundle.
- Click install certificate
- Ensure you repeat this for www. As well as non www.
- To verify the successful upload of ssl, go to the site you are updating.
- Click the green lock that says “secure” in the url bar
- Click certificate
- Check the date of the certificate is in date.
IF THE SITE IS WORDPRESS
- Complete the above
- Go to the back end of your site
- Go to Plugins, Add New
- Search, Install and Activate “Really Simple SSL”
- Go to the plugins settings
- Insert your certificate and click verify.
- Check your site has the green lock in the url bar.
